Bathrooms and kitchens are two of the most important rooms in a home. When those rooms are appealing, the entire place is more appealing. (Which is why we recently did a cheap update to our kitchen.) Everything in a bathroom feels essential – the tub, toilet, vanity, mirror, etc. – so it can seem expensive when you consider how to spice things up. But with a few easy and inexpensive decorating tricks, you can give your bathroom a charming feel. Here are 6 easy ways to dress up a bathroom:
1. Update the soap dispenser and waste basket.
Growing up, I didn’t understand why my mom used a decorative glass bottle for the kitchen dish soap. Then, as I got older I realized it was simply because it made an ordinary essential look nice. (And that’s really one of my biggest tips for decorating a bathroom – or any room – make basic items feel nice.) You can find a bathroom soap dispenser for around $10-$14 to give your bathroom a little extra pizzazz. The same goes for the waste basket. You can get a plastic waste basket for about $5, and it will serve it’s purpose, but it won’t add character. Instead, spend a little more money and get a waste basket that aligns with your theme and is a little more upscale.
2. Make it smell nice.
Regardless of where we are, aromas make us feel comfortable and cozy. Add a scented plug-in, an oil burner or a candle to your bathroom so it always smells inviting.
3. Replace the mirror.
Replacing the bathroom mirror(s) is one of the best ways to make your bathroom more charming. It immediately gives it a more boutique or custom look. My grandmother gave me this mirror as a birthday gift a few years, and I didn’t really have a place for it. We decided to put it in the guest bath, and I absolutely love it. Check places like At Home, Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, Wal-Mart, TJ Maxx and Marshalls for inexpensive, decorative mirrors.
4. Carry out a theme.
An obvious theme helps bring the bathroom décor full circle. Themes can be patterns, colors, styles or destinations. We used a grey and yellow theme in our guest bathroom and incorporated it through the shower curtain, rug and decorative/hand towels. Fortunately, we have silver on our guest bathroom light fixture that matches our replacement mirror. So, we chose a silver soap dispenser to help tie the silver into the theme.
5. Add a plant or flower arrangement.
People love plants. They make us feel connected to nature, thus, giving off a relaxing vibe. You can add artificial or flowers/plants to your bathroom for additional décor. We keep this decorative cottony stick situation in our guest bath, and we’ll often put a thin vase of real flowers in both the guest and master bathrooms. I love fresh flowers, so I love having them anywhere I can see them.
6. Install a cabinet.
We installed this cabinet over the toilet in our master bath for a couple reasons. One, it looked really boring with nothing above the toilet. Two, we could use the extra storage space. We bought this white cabinet for between $80 and $120 and installed it pretty easily. The white cabinet matches our white bathroom vanity, which helps make the bathroom look a bit nicer.
